GETTING THERE...

me and doggy arranged a taxi to pick us up from the pacific breeze in angeles at 1600, after a bit of pissing around we left at 1620, the traffic on the AC-MNL run has improved a lot, and we where at the airport for 1800, we was both on different flights, i was on the thai airways to BKK at 2020, doggy was on cebu pacific leaving at 2230, we had arranged to meet up in BKK, after checking in i was straight on-board as we was leaving early on the almost empty airbus A300-600, i was due into bkk at around 1030, doggy was due about 2 hours later, our plan was to sleep in the airport, then catch the airasia flight to phnom penh at 0700 next morning, we had tried unsuccessfully to book online, so we would take our chances when the ticket office opened at 0500, i arrived early in bkk so i went for a wander round the airport, i went to the bangkok airways 24hour ticket office, they wanted 6400bt for their 0740 flight to phnom penh, we had got a price of 2600bt off airasia website the day before, so fuck that i thought, but the girl behind the desk did point me to the internet cafe and told me if i was to reserve online it would be cheaper, i look at the board and doggy had a 2 hour delay, so i decided to go and randomly chat to some birds somewhere, within 10 minutes i had the phone number of a 23 y o bkk girl called nancy and the promise of a dinner date, doggy finally arrived and we spent the next few hours discussing the previous few weeks escapades in AC and giggling at our cameras, at 0500 we went to the airasia ticket desk, there was already quite a queue, we was quoted 3200bt to get on the next flight at 0700, so we booked, went immediately through check-in, quick bite and then straight on board the decrepit looking boeing 737-300 for the short hop to PP. we was on the ground in PP before 0800, we had filled the forms out on the plane and was through the visa-on-arrival desk($20 and 1 passport photo for your visa) & immigration within about 10 minutes, our bags was waiting, so straight through customs and out. could not see any of the $2 moto-taxis outside, so we was quoted $9 for an air-con taxi, which was way too much, but we paid anyway cos' we was fucked, so then it was a 20 minute drive to the angkor international hotel.

SLEEPING...

i chose the angkor international hotel, i had stayed there before, it has an excellent location just set back from the riverfront, has a 24hour bar and restaraunt, and their own posse of freelancers, we checked in at $15 per night for a pretty good room with very comfy beds. nearby is the shiny new castle hotel $50, we also had a look at the indochine on the riverfront $10, the walkabout wanted $17 but i would not stay in that dump, the flamingo looked ok but we did not get a price, DV8 also has rooms advertised as between $5 & $30 but i would not stay there, IMO the best alrounder was our hotel.

EATING...

the food in PP is superb, much better standard than thailand, because this was a former french colony, the cooks here know how to cook, a few places we tried included, THE METRO (riverfront) one of PPs trendiest places, we had massive sirloins here for $13 served with pepper sauce and sautee potatos, i also had an excellent fruit smoothie here, when it came it was in a proper girly glass, i looked like a right poof, good doggy did not have his camera. LE CROISSEN(riverfront) was another hip place we tried T-bone steaks @ $12 was superb, although a lot smaller then the ones served at le metro, the sandwiches in here are absolutely fantastic, the type you dream about in los, but not cheap @ $3.50 each. SHARKYS excellent mexican food here for between $5-6 for a large plate. HOPE & ANCHOR (riverfront) our afternoon hang-out, english breakfast @ $4.75, bangers n' mash $4 they make excellent toasted baguettes for around $2 each, and they got very cute service staff. WALKABOUT average mid-priced food, but seemed very popular with the ex-pats, especially the large $2 toasties.OUR HOTEL excellent for sandwiches and snacks, but the plated meals looked shite.

GETTING AROUND...

moto-taxis $1 to pretty much anywhere in the city

cyclos-they will want around a $1, but don't bother its quicker to walk

tuktuk- minimum $2 for most trips around the city but they can seat 4, its like a carriage pulled by a motorbike, they will ask if you want to hire them all night for $10, but don't bother, the 2 times me and doggy did this they both fucked off, then they came and found you later for their cash.

SIGHTSEEING...

we hired a tuk tuk for the afternoon @$10, he took us around the city and over the japanese bridge, we also went to the S-21 prison $2 which is very grim indeed. its very nice strolling along the riverfront and around the city by day, one never gets bored by watching the goings on in PP, also to see are the killing fields, the grand palace and the national museum, all of which charge around $2 to get in.

BOOZING & MONGERING...

PP IMO is a mongers paradise, but if you are here for the GFE, forget it, most PP mongering as based around freelancers, they charge $20 ST and can be found in the WALKABOUT only worth going in after 2am, SHARKYS this place has really gone downhill and is not worth bothering with, seems like most of the girls have abandoned the place, MARTINIS its a good drive out of town and is very hit and miss, i never liked the old location, and i dont like the new one either, worth a look at weekends, the main pick-up joint now is HEART OF DARKNESS its buzzing between 12 & 3 am and is packed with birds. our hotel had its own posse of about 10 girls, 4 of them stunners, so if you needed a quick ride, just nip down to the hotel bar and grab one (as doggy did several times)

there are also beer bar type places, most of these charge $5 barfine.

DV8- absolute shite, the girls here are totally frigid and a complete waste of time, $3LD

HAPPY MAN- better than DV8, but not by much $3 LD

CLOUD 9- garbage

LOVE STORY- empty of girls

SHANGHAI- another bar with frigid girls, lots of hastle for drinks (listed price+$1) complete waste of time, i am not sure what the idea of this place is supposed to be.

PIT STOP- very friendly small bunch of girls here in a very friendly bar, i barfined a very cute vietnamese 19 yo from here.

CHILLIS- another bar full of frigid girls, don't bother.

ALIEN BAR- pass on this one too

another form of mongering is the vietnamese ST shophouses, to find these places you will need a tuk-tuk or moto driver who knows where to take you, they are the old buisnesses that used to be at K11(svay park) but since it was bulldozed they have all moved into the city centre, as you approach the driver gives the door guard a nod, then you enter through shutters, there you will find about 15-20 some absolutely stunning VN girls, they charge anywhere from $10-$25 depending on how much they think they can get out of you, but IMO the service in these places is mostly shite, as the girls really dont wanna be there, and there is some very dodgy characters hanging round these places, all but the most hardcore mongers will find these places quite uncomfortable.

LEAVING PHNOM PENH...

we decided to move onto saigon from PP, we arranged a VN visa at the hotel reception who charged us $35 for next day service, we also booked the non-stop bus to saigon from here which is $12, it takes about 6-7 hours depending how long you are held up at the border for, and also includes a pleasant ferry across the mekong, you do have to get off the bus at the border for the security checks, the bus drops you off in phum ngu lao street, right in the heart of saigon.

FINALLY...

IMO the VN girls have the best little bodies in asia, the type of bodies that guys in pattaya droll over is perfectly standard to a VN girl, cambodian girls are very frigid and better off avoiding, although in the past i have found some good ones, but not on this trip, also girls in PP do not like cameras, you are better off locking it in the safe anyway, the HIV rate per capita is the highest in asia, make sure you take rubbers with you, only a maniac would bareback here.

a beer costs between $1-$2 in most places

a pack of marlboros is $1

and thanks a lot to doggy for making the trip with me, it was a lot of fun.

I haven't been in Fields for a number of years. I know that a number of new ones have sprung up recently. Last Time I stayed along fields was at the Oasis but that was not that convenient without a car and would, I guess, be getting rather shabby by now.

A girl that I met there invited me to her family home and i took the opportunity to go. She told me it was a "poor house" and, it was. It was poor of building materials and craftsmanship but it was full of pride! Pride of a mom and dad that kept their whole family together and everyone was able to have dinner together each night. It was humbling to say the least. a lot of respect to these people. Literally, 2/4's to hold the sheets in as a privacy curtain.

Cambodia - Pictorial

This was my 23rd trip here and a few noticeable differences since I was here 9 months ago.

1- For some reason it's MUCH dirtier in Phnom Penh. The riverfront used to be cleaner and there's now trash on the streets and sidewalks everywhere. A shame really.

2- The motodops and TukTuk drivers are completely oversaturated. They sit empty on every corner and its impossible to walk without constantly saying "no thanks" to them all. Yesterday i timed it and was able to walk 13 seconds without having to say the standard no thanks.

Easter Crusifiction Philippines Style...

Woke up early and headed off to San Fernando, Philippines this morning to witness the annual Easter Ritual. People whip themselves to reenact the suffering of Jesus and it all comes to a pinnacle when people actually get nailed to a cross.

This has been a ritual for 50 plus years and I'm told it's just as much a cultural ritual as it is a religious ritual.

I started off at the main church in the center of town. It really was a surreal scene. Many people do this throughout the Philippines and some use fake blood and are never really cut at all. These people here were serious and there wasn't any faking about it. One thing that was really shocking today was the amount of blood, both on people and in the streets. The pictures below are graphic so if that bothers you, stop reading now.

As I drove in and looked for a parking spot, I couldn't help but think it looked like a scene from a movie. I parked the bike, and this is the car that's parked behind me in the main street:

Yes, that's blood splatter all over it.

And then there was this guy being helped:

I wasn't 10 feet and it became apparent, there's no way to escape the blood splatter today. My clothes ended up in a mess. We walked into the main church courtyard and here's the scene

For those readers that are doubters...razor blads, glass and some had ping pong paddles with nails through them and that's what was used to get the blood flowing. The whips are ropes with bamboo on the end.

People walked for hours dragging some very large crosses behind them

The way the streets were packed, the trek to the site where people are crucified would have easily been a 2 hour walk. I was told that there's typically about a thousand that go and see this. Well...

There was people as far as you could see! This crowd was nothing less than 10,000 at the site of the crucifixion.

Security was on hand...maybe they heard rumors of violence or that someone was going to hurt someone??

And then it happens...the warriors storm the hill with the people to be crucified, 3 at a time:

During this, there was a story of Mary and Jesus told as well as several re-enactments of bible scenes. A bit different to include such a heavy biblical interest in this holiday compared to some cultures where Easter is chocolate, coloring easer eggs, baskets filled with candy and doing and easter Egg hunt.

Bangkok, Chao Phaya & The Grand Palace

Just a quick pictorial to give you some scenery shots of Bangkok. The Chao Phaya River runs through the city and is used for a lot of the commerical shippers as well as tourism. Lined with some expensive real estate and is also home to some fantastic hotels with views. There's very few true 5 star hotels in the world and The Oriental is one of them. Here's some shots from inside The Oriental:

There are commuter boats running along the river and it's 8baht per ride. They are crowded but very efficient. some good scenery and you can take them to the Grand Palace, Wat Po and Wat Arun.

Now on down the river we go:

This happens to be another of the worlds finest hotels. I've not ever stayed in this one.

Once off the boat it's a small 2 block walk to The Grand Palace:

Death Railway & Bridge Over River Kwai...

Hope some of the ex military guys and war buffs will enjoy this one. For those that don't know about The Death Railway Here's a couple pics to get your started:

Once you see the inside of the museum and walk through the cemetary you can then ride the actual train on a very scenic 90 minute trip to a waterfall. Almost all of the scenic shots here were taken from a moving train on very old tracks. So, pardon some of the shots but I did my best. The train is well used and tourists as well as local commuters use it.

This girl is wearing a typical thai students uniform and got on the train going home. She was sittin near the very front of the car and this was shot with a 300MM lense. She was in deep thought about her day and I liked the pic

At the waterfalls there was a group of Thai students playing hookey form school. Took their pic and had a chat and they all were worried about if the picture was going to their teacher!

Kampot, Cambodia....Pictorial

Kampot is about a 90 minute ride from Sihanoukville and it's a very laid back town located along the river. Here's a map of Cambodia and you will see Kompot on the very bottom and to the right of Sihanoukville.

Typical transport type vans there. For those on a budget, it's cheap. But, as you can see..it's shit IMHO. Private cars are far better and that's what I prefer.

Next to a river and those are their fishing rods.

Just had a look at another board i use to post on and totally forgot about this.it was in 1988 and still piss myself laughing about this

After a week of doing some damage to ourselves in Angeles and Manila.we decided to head down to puerto galera in the Philippines for 3 days.
The night before we went..we went to del pilar st in manila looking for some companions to take with us..i think there were 6 of us..after a few hours of interviewing we had our girls picked.(only because we were all pissed and wanted to go home)we all got girls from the pitstop bar in manila..we all paid there barfines for the next 5 days.
we all woke up early the next morning to catch the bus to batangas.where we catch the ferry to puerto galera.everything was going well.everybody seemed to get along well and it looked asthough we were all going to enjoy the next few days..we arrived at puerto galera.after we arrived we had to catch a private bunker(boat,canoe)to little laguna beach where we were staying.we jumped in 2 bunkers and were on our way..there were 3 of us and 3 girls in each bunker.
this is where our first problem of the trip started...we were about 50 metres out from little laguna.when the girl i was with decided to stand up and put her hand over the side to feel the water..this was a bad move as my mate pushed her in the water.it was an even worse move.when the 3 of us on the bunker had to jump in the water because the poor girl couldn't swim.we can laugh about it now..but it was very serious at the time.luckily she yelled out i can't swim..else we could have been in for all sorts of problems.
We arrived at little laguna.with my girl still crying her eyes out..
After we arrived.we all went to our rooms to do the business.except myself..because my girl still had the shits..
that night we stayed at the resort.getting drunk and having a good time.
The next morning.i awoke to one of the girls crying and 2 of the other girls comforting her..it turns out my mates girl was on her period and he had the shits and told her she was going back today.
When my mate finally walked out he had all 6 girls hissing at him..so that was it...all 6 girls had to go..we put them back on the boat.and for the next 4 days we were single.
But we discovered sabang.and there were enough girls to keep us happy until we left.
Now what happened on the last days there is one of the funniest things i have ever seen on all my trips to asia..
Where we were staying you had a choice of either paying as you go or putting everything on credit until you go..whenever they would bring us food or drink we would all say.put it on the bill.on our last day.we were at the reception settling our bill.the first 2 people couldn't work out why there bills were so cheap.they were charged 600 peso's.which was a bit hard to work out as the accomodation was 150 pesos per night.and we eat like pigs and drunk like fish.well the penny dropped when one of our blokes had a bill for 11,000 pesos....our mates name was bill.and when we said put it on the bill.they all thought.we were saying to put it on billys account..you could have heard the laughter a mile away..
This was one of my more funnier trips.from life saver to us all being divorced.to putting everything on bills account..

This isn't intended to be a trip report but rather a pictorial. I'm not a writer so it would be one hell of a boring read!

I met up with a mate of mine named Nick who lives in Cambodia. We met in Phnom Penh and then went to Sihanoukville for a while. We then bought tickets ($15?) and took the bus from PP, Cambo to the Vietnam border. Bus was fine but the leg room a bit cramped for most people on it and it was about a 7 hour ride which was an experience in itself. Foto and I had a bus ride with 4 river crossing once and i could help but to think of that trip as we did indeed have 1 river crossing on this ride. (Foto will get a laugh just thinking about this)

Here's our bus:

1st up, the REAL reason I was visiting Vietnam

En route you have a river crossing in Cambodia which takes about 20 minutes. It's fair to say that the towns on both sides of that river would even exist had it now been for the traffic on both sides of the bridge. This was a real experience in itself:

This city itself was awesome with some great architecture, history and even though the city is packed and full of hustle and bustle, they have some awesome parks in it:

When it comes to traffic in HCM...it's packed. Not only did we see accidents every day, we personally witnessed motorbike accidents 2 times directly in front of us.

I was told to go see their post office as it was a great piece of Historical Architecture. They were right:

I attempted to shoot Vietnam at night. Well, for those familiar with photography know how hard htis si with VERY long exposure periods and I did it all freehand as no tripod was available to me. So, please bear with me...

For traveling within Vietnam, they offer some fantastic sleeper buses! Complete with fully laid out bed and reading lights, etc.

And finally, i want to end this pictorial with the FACES of Vietnam. In my travels itss always been the people that make the difference in the trip and some face you just never forget. The conversations with people and interaction that turns to be priceless. To my mate Nick, he was awesome to travel with and put up with all my stops along the way for pictures, etc. Great pics are not had while sitting inside a moving bus or a taxi. They are had by wlaking the streets and just talking to people. Nick ended up with some pretty large blisters on his feet as we walked a LONG way. Now ending with the faces of Vietnam:

I'm a member of many boards and there's a few things I really like about this one so far:

1- no 1 word meaningless posts, yet.

2- even though there has been some banter/discussions on here nobody is personally attacking each other

3- I think the content is great and very helpful to someone wanting to know about the PI.

The atmosphere is one I can enjoy, so far so good guys! Congrats...

After being a member for years of many different boards I have come up with a term that I use all the time. It's called a SOAKER.

Definition: A soaker is a guy who signs up on a board, contributes fuck-all, posts nothing informative (if at all), a lurker, and is only there to SOAK up others information and get tips. Basically, they are selfish and want all the benefits without any effort or contribution on their part. They are of no benefit to the contributing members at all.

Any thoughts guys??

A long time ago, in a place far far away, called Angeles City, you could NEVER find a real bed. I mean one with springs inside.

Phonenix made an attempt, but to short.

Rumor had it that a place I never saw, "Natalee"? had beds?

I just need a bed, not a foam some 4-6inches, to crash on. I like a bed, one with recoil. Yes, I'm overweight but even if I wasn't, I like a bed. Not a futon.

Any advice on where to find a bed in AC these days?

I'm not interested in anything big time like what I read about, $80.$100.usd a night.

Just something around $30-$50.usd a night is fine. I like a bed and a nice room. When I cross the threashold I am "home", not in some primitive 3rd world camping.

I met a young lady (Sallyn) online who lives in Angeles City and decided to pay her a visit.

We spent the first five days in AC and I had a room at the Pacific Breeze which I rate very highly. On the fifth day another lady (Rona) that I had met online came from Bataan to join us.

This is Sallyn. She is very special to me. This was at breakfast at the Pacific Breeze Hotel.

Just remembering about the swagman hotel reminded me of an incident there a few years ago.
They had a hotel in Manila and Angeles City and the football team i use to play for have been using this hotel since the early 80's.
The first time the team went over,there were 40 blokes,after that it was usually about 20 blokes and for the first few years i went over,we had about 10 of us.
We have spent a shit load in this place,but we always got a good discount on the rooms.
Fast track tp maybe around 2000.3 of us arrived at the swagman.in there defence none of the old managers were there.
We arrived at the swagman,asked for a discount,the new manager came out and point blank refused to give us a discount.
We argued that we have been loyal customers here for nearly 20 years and in our opinion helped build this place with the amount of money we had spent there.
But basically he said bad luck and we had to pay the full rate.

We ended up going up the road to the marble inn which was alot cheaper and the rooms were alot better.
But as we were leaving the manager in front of an audience sarcastically said,i hope you have found what you were after.

After this we didn't even go in the hotel for a beer.
A few days later,we seen one of the owners outside our hotel and asked why we were staying here.
The 3 of us gave him a spray and he couldn't believe it and invited us back to his hotel at a discount.but as far as we were concerned the damage had already been done and this place has been off limits to my mates ever since

It seems that BMs would like more information, as well as recommendations and opportunities for comments on hotel options in Angeles City.

The questions above are self-explanatory with perhaps the last not being as clear as I would like. My idea is to set up a pinned message detailing the current room tariffs for each hotel with provisions for differing room types

Naturally if we embark upon this a fair amount of daily work will be involved for the Philippine Secrets team. We are happy to fulfill the needs of oour supportive BMs but obviously don't want to undertake unnecessary work!

Informally over the last several months we have assisted BMs (from various boards) to obtain rooms in various hotels.

Some hotels are very responsive to web-based or e-mail inquiries. Others are shocking!

The Philippine Secrets team could provide this service on a formal basis and hopefully generate some support income for the board thru small commissions from the hotels (No cost to the BM and the room rates quoted would have to be no more than the hotels tariffs)

Subic Bay, New Tollway, Treasure Island...

I got a new scooter about 2 weeks ago and figured it's time to get it out on the road for a day trip so i planned a trip to Subic to have lunch and a bit of swimming at the Treasure Island Resort (owned by BM Kokomo's).

Fueled up the scooter and off we went. Left my house and hit the NLEX tollway. Immediately at the toll booth i was told by security i couldn't take my scooter on the tollway as nothing under 400cc's was allowed. I explained to them it was 500cc's and they asked for the registration. I showed it to them and off I went. Exiting the NLEX I paid the 16 peso toll.

Here's the entrance to the new Subic tollway:

I was again stopped by security and repeated all the steps above. OK, off we go again....for 6 kilometers!! I was stopped again at a checkpoint on the tollway. Again, repeat all the steps above. I asked this cop to radio ahead so that I could make it to my destination without all the constant hassle. He did so and waved me on.

The tollway was smooth and pretty much wide open. Not much traffic but there were quite a few groups of Filipinos with racing motorcycles that were clearly on a circuit and I'm guessing they were going by me at 180KPH as I was sitting on the side having my registration checked! Go figure...

40 minutes and 18 kilometers later I damn near pass my house!!

You see, there's NO entrance or exit for Clark on the tollway. The nearest entrance is in Mabalacat and then you pass right over the very streets you use to get there. What a shame and I feel a real embarassment for the group that planned this tollway. They've made a huge mistake and it's a real shame. What a waste of traffic, gas and time.

At last...motoring down the tollway and stopping along the way for some pics. It pretty much is lined with farmland and rolling hills. Some great scenery to enjoy:

I get to the end of the tollway and guess what?? Yeah, i get the pleasure of being questioned again and again showing my drivers license and registration. And for all the pleasure I've experienced I get to pay the toll of 112Pesos.

Notice all the points and fees? Well, ONE of them is open! Dinalupihan is an exit and I'm told there's NO entrance if you decide to get off for a break.

Now i drive just a short distance to the next toll booth where you guessed it!!! I get stopped again! This time i was told that they clearny knew my bike is over 400cc's but it's a "scooter type" and only "motorcycles" are allowed so I would have to turn around and go back to San Fernando where I could use the "old road" and go to Subic. I'm normally a VERY easy going type of guy and nothing gets me worked up. But, i have to admit I was boiling the fuck over by now. I asked for a supervisors phone number and it was written on a card for me. I pulled out my phone and called him and to my shock, he answered! I explained the situation and the ordeal I had been encountering in when should be an enjoyable day going to Subic. He told me to hand the phone to the officers and he would clear it up. He did and I was allowed to go forward.

And road the remaining way into Subic! At last!

Got to Treasure Island and spent the afternoon having lunch and swimming. It was nice and relaxing. TI charges 300P swimming fee which is comsumable in food and drinks.

Then it was time to drive back to Angeles. I won't go into it all but I finally did loose my temper and let a guy have a dose of my complete disgust at the tollway and the people managing it. I was still having a go at him as we retreated to the safety of his guard shack. It felt GOOD! I've learned long ago that Filipinos have a way of fucking up the easiest and most simple of things. They can turn an opera into a trashy event...

While driving along it was ironic to see the signs that say "Tourism Means Jobs" alongside the road. Will someone please let them know they couldn't handle tourism. They're incompetent, unprepared and can make a wreck of just a day tour!

On the way back i could see a storm brewing.

it wasn't long and we were in typhoon style rains! It poured!!! Safely back at home the guard opened the gate and i got the bike in. Here's the pics once I got my helmet off and looked back out:
